While we are a livestock farm, we are not a petting farm. Our animals are being rotated each day around our pastures so they receive the best graze and we use electrified fence to protect them. Our horses may be working on any given day or may be out to pasture as well. We have specific events where we open our barns for viewing our livestock. For those unfamiliar with the term “poor farm” they were large complexes funded and run by counties or towns to house the poor and destitute, which were often the elderly and disabled. These places were also working farms, complete with fields, orchards, and livestock, which were tended to by the more able-bodied residents, the farm aspect supplied the residents with food, and the excess was sold for profit.

Today, we grow over 10-acres of sunflowers that we cold-press into unrefined, Non-GMO sunflower oil using traditional extruding methods. We have a refill station at the farm and at all farmer’s markets we attend to reduce waste and encourage recycling. We have created feed rations for our hogs and sheep, and are developing a ration for our chickens.

Foster Village Charlotte’s mission is to make that transition easier and provide resources and support for children and families. The journey is often lonely and emotionally exhausting for everyone involved. It was this challenge that prompted four Charlotte-based foster moms to seek out support during their own foster care journeys. After finding each other, they quickly realized the need for a community of support that would ensure every foster parent had the resources they needed to continue offering a safe place for children. Today, even with the disruption of the pandemic, Foster Village thrives.
